Unifying a Vision for a New York: How Coalitions in NYC are Leveraging Technology to Advance their Causes

The New York City Council has developed a policy agenda to promote food equity and ensure that all New Yorkers have access to healthy eating. This report, Growing Food Equity in New York City, is the City Council's plan to help achieve that vision. Structural inequities have caused neighborhoods that are predominantly low-income communities of color to have less access to nutritious food and suffer from greater food insecurity and food-related illnesses. In order to prioritize short-term work with major New York City institutions and create opportunities for years to come, the “New” New York panel was formed.

Initially, the panel's goal was to reactivate New York City's business districts, particularly those that have been slowest to recover after the COVID-19 pandemic, such as Midtown and Lower Manhattan. However, the panel soon broadened its focus to address a wider range of interconnected challenges affecting all New Yorkers, from transportation to housing and from public space to child care. Rick Maroko, a member of the panel, noted that an equitable recovery for this city is essential for the future of New York City's hotel workers, who have faced some of the most difficult challenges in recent years. On the eve of a scheduled auction, the Trust for Public Land (TLP) and the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) negotiated the purchase of 114 community gardens after their demolition and transferred them from public entities to privately owned entities.

New York State Senator Luis Sepulveda praised Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul for assembling the “New” panel to develop an equitable recovery plan after the pandemic. The large and diverse panel of civic leaders and industry experts worked for six months to generate recommendations so that the city and state could partner with each other in all sectors to reimagine a New York that propels the city and region towards its next chapter of equitable and inclusive growth. New York City's food insecurity rate is 12% higher than the national rate and 21% higher than that of New York State. Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams have made it clear with the New York Plan announced today, said New York City Councilwoman Amanda Farías.

This plan is a road map for future prosperity that all New Yorkers can support and, most importantly, a unified vision for a New York. The “New” panel has provided an opportunity for coalitions in NYC to use technology as a tool for advancing their causes. By leveraging technology, these coalitions are able to create more efficient systems for delivering services, increase access to resources, and create more equitable outcomes for all New Yorkers. Technology can also be used to create more transparent systems that allow citizens to track progress on initiatives and hold elected officials accountable. The “New” panel has enabled coalitions in NYC to utilize technology as an effective means of achieving their goals. Through technological advancements such as data analysis tools, mobile applications, online platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), blockchain technology, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), cloud computing solutions, digital marketing strategies, social media campaigns, etc., these coalitions are able to develop innovative solutions that will help them reach their objectives.
